Frequently Asked Questions

How often are tax brackets updated?

Federal tax brackets are adjusted annually for inflation by the IRS (US) and CRA (Canada). The IRS typically announces adjustments in the fall for the following tax year. State brackets may or may not be inflation-adjusted depending on the state.

Where does TaxMath get its tax data?

Rate data is sourced from official IRS Revenue Procedures, CRA publications, and state/provincial tax authority websites. Each jurisdiction includes a source URL and verification date. Data marked "provisional" has not yet been confirmed against final official publications.

What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rates?

Your marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar of income. Your effective rate is total tax divided by total income. Because income is taxed in graduated brackets, your effective rate is always lower than your marginal rate. See our glossary for more.
