Every figure carries its source and the date it was last verified. It is free to use, including commercially, under CC BY 4.0.

License and how to credit us

The dataset is published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. You may copy, adapt and redistribute it for any purpose, including commercially, as long as you give credit. Please credit it as:

Tax rates are facts set by law, and the license covers our compilation, normalization and citations rather than the rates themselves. The cited statutes and agency documents belong to their publishers; the dataset links to them and does not reproduce them.

What the figures mean

  • Single filer. Brackets, deductions and credits are the single-filer figures. Joint, head-of-household and separate schedules are not in this release.
  • Units. Money is nominal dollars in the jurisdiction's currency (USD or CAD). Rates are decimal fractions, so 0.05 is 5%. A bracket applies to income above min up to max; an empty or null max means no upper bound.
  • Status. official means the figures were checked against the jurisdiction's final published schedule; provisional means they were not yet, and the notes column says why. Do not quote a provisional figure as final.
  • Sources. Each figure's source column holds the strongest citation covering it. The sources file lists every citation, with its trust tier (1 is the law or the agency's own schedule; see how we rate sources) and a carried-forward basis where a year reuses the prior year's evidence.
  • County property tax is a survey estimate, not a rate. It is the ACS median tax paid divided by the ACS median home value. It binds no taxpayer and comes with a margin of error. Where the Census published only the edge of an open-ended interval, the value is marked censored with an at-least or at-most bound. Do not read it as a point estimate.

The dataset holds structured figures only. It does not include the text of the documents it cites. How each figure is computed and what the calculators leave out is on the methodology page, and changes to published figures are logged on corrections.

Versions and changelog

A new version is published whenever any figure changes. A published version is never edited, and its manifest records a SHA-256 checksum for every file, so a citation of /data/v1/ always resolves to the same bytes.
